Aegidien Church (Hanover, Germany) WWII Ruins

The Aegidien Church was built in the Gothic style in 1347. It is in central Hanover, Germany and had numerous remodels and additions over the centuries. In 1943, the church was destroyed by Allied aerial bombing. This left only the outer walls, with no trace of the roof structure. The walls still feature many epitaphs and reliefs. It was decided to leave the church in ruins as a war memorial.

TRAVEL TIP: The church is one of the rare sights you can park near,

and visit for free (at least in 2019!). I recommend seeing it, as it is a snapshot of a WWII event. Many other places in Europe have been rebuilt with no trace of their war history.
